Chipping Tips to Lower Your Score

Posted on: 18 April

A consistent chipping game is vital to your success on the golf course.

For most golfers, improving your chipping is one of the simplest ways to lower your score and build your confidence. When you’re chipping, it is important that you have your set up correct so you can execute the shot properly.

Next time you’re playing a chip shot, follow these simple tips:

Setup

1/ Your feet need to be nice and close together (approx. a club head width) with most of the weight (70%) on your front foot.

2/ The ball position should be just back of middle with your hands slightly ahead of the ball (in relation to your target)

Swing

1/ Once you have the correct setup, your arms and club will make a “Y” shape. When you’re swinging the club, you want to ensure your hands remain nice and relaxed and you keep that “Y” shape throughout your swing.

2/ Secondly, it is important that you keep an even tempo throughout your swing when hitting a chip shot. This will ensure that you keep a good feel for the shot and are not rushing your swing. It will also give you the best chance possible of brushing the grass at impact, rather than catching the ball thin or digging into the ground.

3/ Lastly, it is important that however far back you swing the club, you want to ensure you swing the club the same distance on the follow through.

Following these simple tips will ensure you are letting the loft of the club do the work rather than trying to “scoop” the ball up into the air, which causes miss hits and very inconsistent contact!
